My Unpopular Nerd Opinions.

As the title of today’s blog states, what follows are my unpopular nerd opinions.  Pretty self-explanatory, right?  Then let’s get to it.

In my unpopular opinion…

…the Marvel movies (the MCU continuity) are overrated.  That’s not to say I don’t enjoy them.  I’ve seen most of them and find them to be quite fun.  Black Panther was excellent.  But I don’t think they’re the cinematic milestones or groundbreaking films others have made them out to be.  They’re fun.  I like them.  I just don’t think they’re extraordinary.  (I haven’t seen Captain Marvel yet, but it’s on my to-watch list.)

…Lawful Good is the best alignment, and Chaotic Neutral is the most insufferable.

…Mass Effect: Andromeda was not the unplayable mess some angry critics made it out to be.  I really enjoyed it.  I found the characters to be very well developed, and they had much more personality and distinction than some of the cast of the first Mass Effect (which I loved, but I don’t think that those characters became the beloved versions of themselves until Mass Effect 2).  I liked the storyline.  I’m sad they ditched plans for sequels and extra content.

…fan art as a gift is the most precious thing a creator can receive from a fan, but fan art as a business model makes me sad.  This is, by far, my most unpopular nerd opinion and flies in the face of how things actually work these days.  I know fan art sells.  I know people want it.  I know lots of artists enjoy making it and can even land paying gigs with the properties of the very fan art they’re producing.  But when I was just starting in this crazy career, most other creators were pitching original works and busting their butts to get people to know their characters.  Convention artist alleys were full of original comics and ideas.  I found it to be a pretty magical time, and it saddens me to see less and less of that magic at conventions.

…Batman is also overrated.  I mean the character as a whole, not a specific movie or book.  It’s not that I dislike Batman!  I like him!  But I don’t think he’s the greatest superhero ever created, nor do I think he can actually beat anyone “given enough prep time.”  Also, if you described Batman to someone without actually saying you were describing Batman, I think he sounds more overpowered than people claim Superman to be.

…Superman Returns is not the unwatchable mess people make it out to be, and I think Brandon Routh deserved another shot at playing Superman.

I know these opinions are unpopular.  I’ve gotten into countless arguments over every one of these opinions.  They’re not meant to sway you away from things you love.  Every so often I put these out there to see if anyone agrees with me, but usually not.  They’re unpopular for a reason.
